Iberian Fallow Deer
Dama dama
With palmate antlers and a spotted coat, during the autumn groan across dehesas and Mediterranean woods.
The fallow deer (Dama dama) stands out for its palmate, shovel-shaped antlers and spotted coat, which darkens in winter. It lives in mixed woodlands and meadows of Castilla y León, Extremadura and Andalusia. The best time is the groan, from late September to October, when bucks are most active and vocal and the antlers fully developed. Hunted by stalking or driven, it pairs well with red deer or wild boar.
