Driven Red-Legged Partridge in Spain: What an Ojeo Is Really Like
High, fast, curling birds over a line of pegs an hour from Madrid — the ojeo is the most social day in Spanish shooting, and the hardest bird in Europe.
The short answer: an ojeo is Spain's driven shoot for wild red-legged partridge. A line of beaters pushes birds over a line of pegs, each gun works with a secretario who loads and spots, and the day runs from October to March. Our shoots are less than an hour from Madrid.
How the day runs
A shooting day is built from several drives. Before each one, pegs are drawn by lot and guns walk quietly to their number — the position defines your shooting arc and your safety limits, and you stay in it until the drive is called. Between drives the line moves up, so over the day every gun sees different ground. Lunch is not an afterthought in Spain: it is part of the day, and it is long.
Why the red-legged partridge is the hardest bird in Europe
Wild Alectoris rufa breaks over the ridge already at speed, uses the wind, and curls. Unlike driven pheasant, the birds come in bursts and rarely on the line you expect. Most visiting guns need the first drive simply to recalibrate.
Guns, cartridges and the secretario
A pair of 12- or 20-bore guns is the classic setup, with a secretario loading, calling birds and keeping the count. If you shoot a single gun that is perfectly normal too — tell your organiser in advance so the cartridge supply and the secretario's role are set up correctly. What to wear
Spanish shooting dress is smart country: a shooting coat or gilet in muted colours, breeks or trousers, good boots, ear and eye protection. Winter mornings in the meseta are genuinely cold and the afternoons can be mild — layers matter more than anything expensive.
Etiquette that matters
Three rules travel further than any other: know your arc and never swing through the line; do not shoot low birds; and be honest about which birds are yours. Spanish shoots are social, and reputation follows a gun.
When to come
