Spain's hunting calendar, month by month

Spain hunts all year round, but every species has its window. Mountain game — ibex, chamois and aoudad — runs September to May depending on the range; the red stag rut is mid-September to October; montería and driven partridge run October to February–March; roe deer, April to October; wild boar, year-round. Firm dates are published by each autonomous region in its annual season order, so these windows are indicative.

Hunting in Spain in autumn (September–November)

If you can only travel once, travel in autumn: it is the only window where the rut, the montería and mountain stalking all overlap.

Hunting in Spain in winter (December–February)

It is the best time for an ibex trophy: coats at their peak and rutting activity that concentrates the males.

Hunting in Spain in spring (March–May)

A good window to combine ibex and chamois in one trip, with less hunter pressure than midwinter.

Hunting in Spain in summer (June–August)

The roe deer rut in late July is the year's best moment to call one in and take it on the stalk.

When is the best time to hunt Spanish ibex?

October to May depending on the subspecies: Gredos opens in September, Beceite and Sierra Nevada run October to May, and Ronda November to May. Winter gives the best capes and concentrates mature males.

When is the red stag rut in Spain?

From mid-September through October. It is the only window in which stags can be located by sound and stalked at the peak of the rut.

When can you join a montería?

October to February. Each montería is a specific day on a specific estate, so the best dates are booked months in advance.

Can I combine several species in one trip?

Yes, and it is the norm. Autumn and winter overlap the most: you can combine ibex with red stag, mouflon, wild boar or a driven partridge day in the same trip.
