Gold-medal Spanish ibex

Going after a gold-medal ibex is not about hunting more days. It is about hunting different ground with a different criterion — and knowing what you are looking at before you squeeze, not after.

European trophies are measured with the CIC system, not Boone & Crockett or SCI, and scoring sorts horns into bronze, silver and gold bands. A gold-medal program is organised differently from day one.

What changes from an ordinary stalk

Three things. First, the ground: not every estate holds males of that class, and where you hunt stops being a question of convenience. Second, time: you have to be willing to let good males walk for several days, which means booking more days per animal. Third, the judgement in the field, which is where it is actually won or lost.

The band is called before the shot

This is our rule and it is not negotiable: the guide estimates the CIC band in the field and tells you before you shoot. You know what you are hunting and which band the trophy falls into before you squeeze the trigger, not when the invoice arrives. The opposite practice — arguing the trophy fee after the shot — is the single most common source of conflict between a foreign hunter and an outfitter, and it is avoidable.

The honest part

A gold-medal male is an old and scarce animal, and no serious operator guarantees a medal. What can be guaranteed is the ground where they exist, enough days to find them, and that nobody will push you to shoot a male that is not one. If the trip ends without gold, it ends without gold — and without a gold trophy fee.

All four subspecies

The program can be aimed at any of the four. Horn conformation varies considerably between them, so it is worth deciding beforehand exactly which trophy you are after.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee a gold medal?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. We guarantee ground where they exist, the days to look for one, and that the band is called before the shot.
What if only a silver-class male appears?
You decide, with the band already estimated in the field. If you shoot, you pay for that band; if you do not, there is no trophy fee.
How many days does it take?
Four to six per animal. With fewer, the pressure to shoot the first decent male works against you.
Which scoring system is used?
CIC, the European standard. If you need an SCI measurement for your records, that can be done as well.
